The event voted as the best of 2008 wass also one of the newest: Independents’ Day. The inaugural event was held on September 20th on Gay Street between Third Avenue and Pearl Alley. The street was closed to vehicular traffic and was filled with local musicians, performers, vendors, artists, and creatives. Independents’ Day was completely staffed by volunteers and came together beautifully in record time.
The 14-hour lineup of events included local bands and djs, performances inside of Skylab and Due Amici, an Interactive Idea Convention, and more. [Read More]

While sometimes overlooked, the Chop Chop Gallery was voted as the the number one art gallery space in Columbus in 2008. This Parsons Avenue gallery opened in mid-2006 and was created as a collective space to be used not only for art shows and events, but also as a workshop and workspace for a variety of projects. Everything from skateboard ramps to bike messenger bags have been created inside the Chop Chop space by local creative entrepreneurs. [Read More]

While only open for roughly five months last year (July through November) bonoPIZZA made a good enough impression on the regulars of Columbus Underground to land it a number one spot in our poll for Best New Restaurant of 2008.
What started off with a simple inquisitive post about the discovery of their menu quickly grew into one of the longest running discussions on Columbus Underground in 2008, with regulars flocking to the restaurant multiple times a week to partake in the quality food, the sidewalk ambiance, and the entertainment by hosts Bill & Peggy Yerkes. My husband and I are die-hard Middle Eastern food fans, and luckily, we have a lot of choices for that type of cuisine here in Columbus. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that one of our favorite holes in the wall, Anatolia Cafe, offers a weekday lunch buffet. And what a deal it is!
Without knowing exactly what (or how much food) is on the buffet, we ordered one of their meze platters at first, thinking we were going to order a la carte. The meze platter is huge, with lots of different appetizers, both spicy and not, to suit everyone’s tastes. [Read More]

It’s no surprise that the Short North won “Best Neighborhood” of 2008 by a healthy margin over the competition. It’s easily the most complete urban neighborhood with a vibrant mix of residential spaces, unique restaurants, boutique shopping, art galleries, watering holes, swanky lounges, pocket parks, and more. I was just checking the homes for sale in Woodland Park and there are some great bargains! It is a great time to buy in Woodland Park. The neighborhood continues to have low crime, quiet streets, wonderful neighbors, and good amenities. Our YMCA has fun classes and a nice, convenient work out facility, gym, pool, and whirlpools. The Alum Creek bike trail is now extended past Three Creeks Metro park and provides a great relaxing getaway.
The new Old Bag Of Nails is open for business. With the leaves down we can see the James Turrell permanent light exhibit in the Palm House at the Conservatory from Broad Street (it comes on at dusk and ends each night at dawn). [Read More]

Calling all artists… this show is being created to celebrate the life and love of Katie Reider and in conjunction with a fundraiser being held in her honor February 14. While Katie’s life is the inspiration for the show, your work should convey the theme “Show Your Love” in anyway that inspires you.
Katie was a local musician who passed away July 14, 2008 after a 2 year battle with a rare facial tumor. She is survived by her loving partner and 2 beautiful children. [Read More]
