Columbus Mega Summer Weekend 2010 - Vol. 16

Sixteen weekends of summer awesomeness in Columbus. With the approach of Labor Day, this will be our final Mega Summer Weekend! The first Ohio State Buckeyes football game is tonight against Marshall. The Clippers have their final home games tonight and Friday night. Join them for 50 cent wings and Buck-A-Bone! Waterfire and BalletMet are having a free performance in Genoa Park on Friday night. HOMAGE is opening for Gallery Hop this Saturday. Greek Festival is happening on both Friday and Saturday. Want some exercise? Do Bike the CBus on Saturday. Or, if you would rather marvel at bacon themed everything, go to BaconCamp at the North Market. The Wexner Center is Free on Sunday and their big summer sale in their store ends that day as well. If you don’t have plans for Labor Day, head over to the Hills Market for their annual Ohio Hog Roast or go to the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival or go to COSI to see Titanic, the last day for the exhibit is Labor Day. Museums Look to the Future; Find Spam, Viagra

On Wednesday September 1st, 2010 museums and galleries from around the world participated in an elaborate question and answer initiative that proved to be equal parts social science experiment and educational opportunity. Grandview Yard Opens Phase One Today

Grandview Yard first announced Phase 1 of their 90 acre development in Grandview Heights in July of 2009, and that phase is celebrating the grand opening tonight with a community open house between 6pm and 8:30pm. We sat down this morning with Brian Ellis, President and COO of Nationwide Realty Investors to talk about the new development and take a tour of the completed site.

An architecture exhibition titled What’s Next: New Visions for Clinton Theater features the drawings and plans of three concepts that envision the future of the historic Clinton Theater and its adjacent properties, all of which are now facing impending demolition. Conceived and created by Columbus-based architect, Tim Lai, the three proposed concepts seek to transform the theater’s site into a community-focused space and (re)create a landmark in the Clintonville neighborhood. New Restaurant Coming Soon to Wexner Center

The cafe space located inside the Wexner Center has been operated by the Cameron Mitchell Catering Company as “Cam’s on Campus” for the past three and a half years, although the concept came to a recent close in August. The Wexner Center is currently in the final stages of selecting a new local operator for the cafe. Rumor has it that a variety of proposals were submitted from places including Northstar Café, Mozart’s Bakery, The Betty’s Family of Restaurants, Taste of Belgium Waffles, Omega Artisan Baking and even Whole Foods. Development in Weinland Park Gets Big Boost

The Weinland Park Neighborhood Plan (PDF) was adopted by Columbus City Council in July of 2006, and the area has seen some slow and steady progress since then. Changes to the neighborhood may start coming much more quickly according to a Dispatch article today (”$15 million pledged to kick-start Weinland Park area“) that provides information about the redevelopment efforts of the newly founded “Weinland Park Collaborative”.

62nd Emmy Awards Gift Totes to Feature Local Swag

Local jewelry designer Kristan Early of Bella Beads Studio is one excited lady. The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday and tonight is the Secret Room Style Lounge Event for the Emmys that will feature her work. The Emmys Secret Room Style Lounge is a benefit for Operation Smile, offering for auction gift bags signed by celebrities. Early created five new designs and seventy-five pieces for the event. Some will be sent to magazine editors as well.

Early has been creating jewelry as a side business for nine years. She says, “I have had incredible support by friends, family and customers. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity and if nothing else, being part of the event is really a reward in itself.” For the past three years, she has had a studio space in Junctionview Studios and has participated in local shows in Columbus. Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival Invades Columbus

The Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival rolled in to Columbus on Tuesday night. The two staged hard rock festival was originally set to be hosted at the LC Pavilion but due to ticket demand was split between the LC and Nationwide Arena.

The second stage music kicked off at the LC shortly after 3pm and featured the bands XFactor, Jackie, New Medicine, Hail the Villain and Airbourne. [Read More]

The Final Downtown Summer Concert happens tonight with The Spikedrivers. Keep an eye out for the Jeni’s Bajaj! The Friends of Goodale Park is having a fundraiser for the new fountain tonight at Park St. Cantina. St. James Tavern and Fusion Cafe have combined forces for a Flying Dog cask eventClayspace is hosting an open house on Friday night. Urban Scrawl takes over Dodge Park in Franklinton on Saturday. Grandview Art Hop is also on Saturday, as well as a fundraiser for the New Albany Women’s Network. Harrison’s is having a Hog Roast from 3-7pm and Merion Village is having a Block Party. Or head over to Arty Party from 6-10pm at the Ohio Art League. GLBT Night at Zoombezi Bay is happening in the evening. Tickets are $20. Celebrate zucchinis all weekend long at the Obetz Zucchini Festival. Available Light Theatre’s Merrily We Roll Along continues this week. Get down at O-GEE on Saturday night at Due Amici or educated on Dubstep at Bristol Bar. Close out your weekend on Sunday with Mods vs. Rockers, line up is at Tigertree and Milk Bar at 5pm. Best of Shadowbox closes on Saturday. And if you wanted to see Wicked, the show closes on Sunday. Have a great weekend and enjoy the cooler weather!
