Franklin University plans for new expansions

Franklin University's 2nd U.S. campus, overseas reach on growth agenda

Franklin University plans to open its first overseas classrooms and a second U.S. campus outside Ohio by fall 2009, which will mean more jobs in Columbus, President David Decker said in an interview with Columbus Business First.

In his first year heading the downtown business school, Decker has reorganized Franklin into two colleges and added seven leadership jobs plus more full-time faculty, courses and majors – all in preparation for his goal to increase enrollment to 20,000 over the next five years.

Decker expects a quarter of the enrollment growth would come from a physical presence overseas, which would be a first for an Ohio private school. Under the Franklin approach, a core of full-time faculty develop a highly structured curriculum to be taught by adjunct instructors, so expanding outside Ohio will mean about a dozen new faculty and about 35 new staff positions. “We may very well be looking at a physical expansion on the downtown campus,” Decker said.

Poll workers will not be allowed to take voting machines home for safekeeping in the days before the November presidential election because the practice known as "sleepovers" is an unacceptable security risk, Ohio's elections chief said Tuesday.

Taking machines home makes it nearly impossible to keep track of what happens to a machine or memory card once it goes into the custody of a poll worker, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said.

The changes are meant to address actual security concerns _ including the fear that machines could be tampered with _ but to also address national perceptions of Ohio's election system, which has come under fire in recent years, Brunner said.

Of course, if you're not into football, there are also alternatives available.

She's a mother of three from Lewis Center, a minivan-driving matriarch who shuttles her children to drama club and cooks buttered noodles for dinner. Amy Dalrymple Murphy is also a crafty connoisseur.

The tattooed, mile-a-minute talker who digs the music of Joy Division and the writings of J.D. Salinger runs a clothing line called AmyD, which features "found" materials such as bedsheets, curtains and tablecloths.

With business steady enough for Murphy to extend beyond her craft fairs and online shop, she opened a boutique last month at 211 E. Arcadia Ave. in the Clintonville neighborhood. The store is open Friday afternoons and by appointment.

Didier and Minervia Alapini hope to hook Downtown customers on their way of cooking with the tiny L'Appat Patisserie and Cafe at N. 3rd and Long streets, and then reel them in with a series of concept restaurants to be opened later.

L'Appat is scheduled to open in late September. The stand-alone space, a former wine shop too small for tables, will offer carryout breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, soups and a few entrees, as well as a constantly changing line of baked goods.

Cheers to being open until 7 pm and open on Saturdays. Here's hoping they have much success so we see some of the other plans come to fruition as well.

An Open Book on 5th & High closing
Posted by Geoff W on Tue Aug 26, 2008 7:31 pm in Shopping News
After having a good lunch at newly-renovated Gay street's Tip-Top Kitchen, I was heading down 5th avenue and noticed that "An Open Book", the gay-friendly video / bookstore, had their whole store on sale (35% off). As "whole-store" sales don't usually happen often, I pondered if they were in fact alas shutting down.

An advertisement in a magazine I saw shortly afterwards (while tanning at Club Columbus, but this is another story, heh) did confirm it. After many years of serving the g/l/b/t community (their bumper sticker collection was quite witty and is still worth a look) they look to be completely gone by September 1st. Stopping in there before they closed (at 6 pm), a worker (Jim) confirmed this to me.

I remember when Metro Video, which merged with AOB a few years ago, was just a few doors north of the old Union Station, on the east side of High street. The combined business moved to a great 'corner' shop-location further north on the west side of High street, then to their (final) location at the corner of 5th and High.

While it is a (good) sign of the times that a separate 'gay bookstore' may not necessarily be needed, per se', anymore, I myself certainly feel it to be of historical note.

In any case, I was just passing along the news. A toast to you, An Open Book!

Falling prices means it's a good time to buy

Columbus: Falling prices means it's a good time to buy

With its market in the doldrums, the Columbus Board of Realtors launched a campaign earlier this year to let home buyers know that "the grass is greener here." After all, they point out, the housing market should be put in perspective.

"We're a stable market," says Greg Hrabcak, president of the Columbus Board of Realtors. "And we're affordable." Last year, Forbes.com said Columbus was the third-most stable city in the nation, after Seattle and Pittsburgh.

"There are a lot of positive things going on now," Hrabcak says. "Home buyers are getting a great value for the dollar." Although the housing market hasn't turned around, he says more home buyers are starting to shop around. "We're not Detroit or Toledo," Russo says. "We'll come out of it, and we'll come out faster than other cities."

Alphastate - Breathing and Meditation
Posted by Walker on Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:20 am in CU Video Podcasts

Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the conditioned, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. It often involves turning attention to a single point of reference.

Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices which may emphasize different goals -- from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind.

Time Warner, Big Ten Network reach agreement

Chalk up a victory for the Big Ten against a national power. Late tonight, Time Warner Cable and the Big Ten Network reached an agreement in principle allowing the nation's second-largest cable company to carry the year-old network's programming.

That means Buckeye fans who subscribe to Time Warner will be able to watch Saturday's season opener against Youngstown State, and subsequent games carried by BTN, from the comfort of home.

The agreement ends a yearlong stalemate between Time Warner, the dominant cable company in central Ohio, and BTN, which is expected to broadcast three of the first five Buckeye games this season, including the Big Ten opener against Minnesota.
