Eighty people appointed by Mayor Michael B. Coleman are shaping the future of Columbus. After their meetings, almost half go home to the suburbs.
Coleman said he has no problem with suburban residents shaping city policy. They have expertise as business executives, government officials, advocates and educators, he said. And they pay taxes, too — the same city income-tax rate as Columbus residents — if they work inside the city.
Columbus has no policy on appointments, but Coleman spokesman Mike Brown said the mayor seeks a diverse group of advisers with different fields of knowledge, different backgrounds and, for Columbus residents, homes in different parts of the city.
