A Year of Tarantino Headed to Studio 35

Mike McGraner had a plan for 2020. Didn’t we all?

McGraner’s plan included a cinematic revisit of all things Tarantino. The film series to unspool at Studio 35 included “literally everything Quentin Tarantino’s directed or written to be shown over twelve months,” he said.

Of course, as was the case with essentially every single plan made for 2020, the Quentin Tarantino Director’s Series fell victim to lockdown. But there’s good news for QT fans because McGraner and Studio 35 will relaunch the program this weekend. The 1994 Tarantino-penned, Oliver Stone-directed Natural Born Killers hits screens at 11 p.m. both Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28.

Thus begins the portion of the series that walks through the films Tarantino wrote but did not direct. The second installment in the section, playing February 17 and 18, is a 1996 Robert Rodriguez-directed vampire flick.

“It’ll be the Nite Owl version of From Dusk Till Dawn,” McGraner says.

The final film in the writer portion of the series is Tony Scott’s 1993 thriller True Romance, after which McGraner turns his attention to Tarantino’s work behind the camera with chronological screenings of all nine of the filmmaker’s works.

But McGraner’s intention is not simply to revisit Tarantino’s catalog. He wants to immerse you in the QT world, with bonus content and plenty of surprises planned for each screening. The 11 p.m. pre-show this weekend promises clips from Tarantino’s early projects.

Why so much attention for one filmmaker?

Pulp Fiction was the first film of his that I saw in theaters, and it changed my life,” McGraner says.
