Bagels only the beginning at Spinelli’s Deli

The Dispatch wrote Bagels only the beginning at Victorian Village eatery

Don’t misunderstand: Joe Spinelli loves bagels. It’s just that, after four years as a Manhattan Bagel franchisee, he grew a little tired of selling nothing but circular pieces of dough with a hole in the middle. So, in 2001, Spinelli and co-owner Bill Ward ditched the franchise, kept the space off Neil Avenue in Victorian Village and opened Spinelli’s Deli.

These days, the small storefront still serves bagels — 14 kinds baked at 4 a.m. daily — but also features soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, coffee drinks, breakfast platters and, last but not least, banana-chip muffins (yum).

For now, Spinelli’s closes at 5 p.m. daily, but that might soon change. Customer interest in later hours has prompted Spinelli and Ward to create a dinner menu featuring individual pizzas, pasta dishes and desserts. Expanded hours — until 9 p.m. — could start as early as Oct. 1. And if patrons have any other suggestions, they should let Spinelli or Ward know.
