The Columbus Underground Unofficial Online Book Club was alive and well in 2009, with many different books being regularly discussed. Our reader’s poll revealed that Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel The Help ended up being the most popular read of the year. This fictional tale is set in 1960s Mississippi and explores the race relations between black female servants and the white females that they serve. The book was released early in 2009, but slowly gained a fanbase throughout the year by gaining critical praise from national reviewers and lots of discovery via word-of-mouth.
