Black Olive, the latest venture by the owner of Shoku and Tyfoon, boasts a striking decor but, in some ways, still seems to be an unfinished operation.

Some of the glass tabletops, for instance, are literally unfinished: The dangerously sharp corners produced by the 90-degree cuts hadn’t been smoothed weeks after the restaurant opened in the Short North. Some of the tables aren’t level.

And a women’s restroom was out of order for an evening, forcing both sexes to line up outside the men’s room — with no one mentioning that a second set of restrooms was available in the other dining area. Not that you’d want to be over there: The kitchen door never closes, so clanging and shouting can be heard. A busing station nearby provides even more noise.
