    Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman hopes a new city-supported health clinic will spark economic rebirth in the heart of the hard-hit South Side.

    The city plans to rebuild the John R. Maloney South Side Health Center — closed and demolished in 2006 after inspectors discovered it sinking, cracking and leaking — on the site of a Schottenstein store that closed a year earlier.

    For Coleman’s South Side plan, the city already has acquired 47 properties along Parsons Avenue through Columbus Urban Growth Corp., its nonprofit development arm. Columbus Urban Growth bought the old Schottenstein store in 2006, and it is scheduled to tear down the building in May.
