After just four years on the job, Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Talisa Dixon announced her plans to retire at the end of the 2023 school year, effective on June 30th.
“I have grown personally and professionally during my time here, and I thank each of you – every teacher, every staff member, every student and their families – for being a part of that journey,” stated Dr. Dixon in a release issued this afternoon. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the Columbus community alongside so many talented people and I will cherish the relationships I have built here.”
Dr. Dixon oversaw the operations of the largest public school district in the state of Ohio through the turbulent period of the coronavirus pandemic, just one year after taking on the role in March 2019. Her accomplishments include the launch of the Columbus Promise program for free college tuition for CCS graduates, the securing of over $15 million in new grants, the establishment of new internal programs including the Department of Engagement, as well as many other community-centric partnerships.
“The Board is grateful for Dr. Dixon’s contributions over the past four years, especially in navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said CCS Board President Jennifer Adair. “She has set the District up for success in the years to come with the implementation of a new Strategic Plan and the creation of our Portrait of a Graduate.”

Updated 12/11/2022: On December 9, 2022, Columbus City Schools Board of Education President Jennifer Adair released a letter thanking Dr. Dixon on her service and announcing Dr. Angela Chapman will take on the role of Interim Superintendent starting January 1, 2023 while the board launches a search for a new Superintendent.
From Adair’s statement:
“As the Board looks ahead to finding a new leader, we know that this time of transition is critical. We must keep one eye on our present with a laser focus on student outcomes and another on the future of the District.
This is why the Board intends to name an Interim Superintendent to lead the organization starting in January, as Dr. Dixon remains on as an Educational Administrator to support and assist with the transition of leadership for the remainder of the school year.
I look forward to the Board naming current Chief of Transformation and Leadership Dr. Angela Chapman as the Interim Superintendent, effective January 1, 2023.”
