The pace of development in Columbus showed no signs of slowing in 2019. Below, you’ll find our roundup of the significant urban development projects that were under construction throughout the year.
Downtown
A large red building is now visible from multiple vantage points and should be open soon.
Work continues on The Matan, although not without some controversy about its design.
Over 200 new apartments on State Street and nearly a hundred on Main Street should come onto the market in 2020.
Significant work has already been done at the new Crew Stadium site.
The apartments going up on a former Motorists Insurance parking lot now have a name – the Residences at Topiary Park.
Across from the main library, four of the buildings that once made up the Grant Oak Apartments complex are being renovated, while a new building goes up next door.
Work continues on the Reach on Goodale.
The transformation of the Long Street Corridor continues, where two major projects are progressing.
Work has progressed on a seven-story building on South High Street.
The first tenants are scheduled to move in to The Hayden in early 2020, while work continues on a second historic renovation a few blocks away.
The facade of several historic buildings are being preserved as part of a new hotel that is going up on Park Street.
Work to clear the site for a new State Auto parking garage involved taking down a building with a large mural painted on its side.
A new parking option will be available next year for visitors to the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
A smaller garage is under construction at the northeast corner of Long and Neilston Street. That building, from the Edwards Companies, was first proposed for a different site, about 300 feet to the east.
2020 will see the first excavation and, eventually, vertical construction on the 28-story Hilton Hotel expansion – preliminary work on the site began in December, after a ceremonial groundbreaking in August.
University District
A parking garage is going up along the new Cannon Drive, near the Wexner Medical Center.
Site work has begun off of College Road, where OSU’s new Arts District will soon begin to take shape.
Just to the east, on the other side of High Street, two large cranes tower over the 15th and High site – under construction is the new WOSU Headquarters and the first of two office and retail buildings that will frame a new public plaza.
In Weinland Park, new buildings are going up to the south of the Grant Park apartments.
An 18-unit building is being built in a parking lot that sits behind an existing High Street building.
The former Fifth Avenue Elementary School in Dennison Place has been demolished and work is set to begin in January on the mixed-use development that will be taking its place.
South Side
The Parsons Place Apartments are currently under construction.
New buildings continue to rise along Livingston Avenue, as the Nationwide Children’s Hospital campus expands.
Work has started on the complicated renovation of the historic Hoster Brewery complex.
A new plan for the Maennerchor Building in the Brewery District is starting to take shape.
Preliminary work has started on this Schumacher Place project after a lengthy approval process.
Italian Village
A project at the northern edge of the neighborhood appears to be close to wrapping up.
Heading south on Fourth Street from there, work continues on the Budd Dairy building, the Spring Cleaners site and at Jeffrey Park, where more than 800 apartment and townhome units have been completed.
Closer to High Street, a new five-story parking garage will be wrapped with apartments and feature a restaurant space as well.
Franklinton
A recent visit to the Mount Carmel West campus revealed a major demolition project in progress.
Work continues on the conversion of a vacant motel into housing for at-risk youth.
A $240 million corporate headquarters is rising on the periphery of the neighborhood.
A three-story building will add more new apartment units to East Franklinton.
Grandview Heights
Two apartment buildings and a three-story office building are under construction at Grandview Yard, as are nearly 80 new single family homes.
Meanwhile, after several false starts, utility work has begun at the Grandview Crossing site, with construction on the first apartment and office buildings scheduled to start in early 2020.
Near East Side
The final phases of construction on this 25-acre project are on track to be completed next year, marking the completion of a ten-year transition from Poindexter Village to Legacy Pointe.
The Gemma development, at Oak and Ohio, is under construction, as is the latest phase of the Scholar House.
West Side
Utility work has begun and the first vertical construction is scheduled for 2020 in the large Metro Park and mixed-use development known as Quarry Trails.
On the other side of Trabue Road, the apartment portion of this large development is nearly complete.
Short North
Work continues on two significant projects along High Street – the six-story Residences at the Sutton and the five-story mixed-use project at the corner of Third and High.
Other Neighborhoods
The Bridge Park North Market is scheduled to open in 2020, as work continues on multiple buildings in the development, including a new field house and a new condo building.
Several buildings are going vertical at the same time on the 20-acre Founders Park development.
Up north, work continues on the 1,200-acre Evans Farm.
If you’ve been to the airport recently, you may have noticed that CMH is getting a new rental car facility.
A building with a modern design is going up on Main Street in Bexley.
A small retail building is nearly complete at the corner of North Broadway and High in Clintonville.
Several business have opened, but work continues on the $500 million Easton Town Center expansion.
The 40-unit Marsh Brook Place is under construction.
Linden is getting a new community center and park.
The large Hamilton Quarter development near New Albany continues to come together.
The transformation of a former Giant Eagle is underway on the north side.
September of 2020 is the target completion date for the new University City development.
A new hotel and mixed-use building is under construction on Lane Avenue.
Norton Crossing in Whitehall is expected to open in 2020.
