The Columbus Urban League (CUL) announced today that it has recently received its largest individual donation in the 104-year history of the organization. A $6.5 million gift was made to the local nonprofit from Seattle-based philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
“We’re honored and grateful that Ms. Scott and her team recognized the Urban League’s value and impact to the community,” said Stephanie Hightower, CUL President and CEO. “By placing racial equity and social justice at the forefront of her philanthropic mission, Ms. Scott is not only validating our work but shining a much-needed spotlight on the nation’s structural and institutional limitations and helping to build a stronger, more resilient society for everyone.”
In 2019, Scott committed to giving away the majority of her $30+ billion dollar fortune by signing on to the Giving Pledge campaign. Earlier this year it was reported that she has already given away over $12 billion to 1,257 groups. The majority of her wealth comes from a 4 percent stake in Amazon, founded by her ex-husband Jeff Bezos.
CUL stated that the donation will be used for building capacity and stabilizing existing programming.
“We have historically lived hand to mouth due to Philanthropic redlining,” added Hightower. “And while this gift allows for aspirational planning it is important that our local investors and partners continue to support the relevant and impactful programmatic efforts our community deserves.”
