Welcome back to our “Dine Like a Local” series, where one of our city’s trusted food ambassadors walks you through some of their favorite places and helps you discover some new places to try!
In this edition, we’re hearing from Alina Antonyuk, who goes by @TastingColumbus on Instagram (give her a follow!) and shares updates on some amazing foodie finds all over the region.
“I love the local dining scene in Columbus because it has given me the opportunity to meet local business owners who truly care about the community and want to give back,” said Antonyuk. “Being a Ukrainian immigrant, I have always appreciated how welcome Columbus is to food from other cultures. Throughout the city, we can find some of the best restaurants owned by those who are also immigrants.”
Here are some of her spots, across 10 different categories of dining:
Favorite Brunch Location
With two locations in Columbus, Emmett’s has quickly become one of my favorite brunch spots. I typically go to the Open Air location, which is bright, spacious, and has easy parking. I love the Emmything sandwich with tots and can’t forget about their amazing coffees!
Favorite Lunch Location
Freedom a La Cart Café is a hidden gem right in the heart of downtown. They make awesome pastries, lunch items, and even have coffee options. My favorite part about Freedom a La Cart is their mission. Every time you purchase something from their café, it goes toward supporting local survivors of human trafficking.
Favorite Location for Happy Hour
Forno’s happy hour deals are hard to beat. All drinks, snacks, shared items, and pizzas are half off Mon-Fri 4-6pm. The warm ricotta and Forno Chicken pizza are my happy hour favorites. P.S. don’t forget to make a reservation; they fill up fast.
Favorite Coffee Shop
Columbus has so many great coffee spots, so it is hard to pick just one. But Fox in the Snow has been one of my most visited since they opened. They have a full coffee menu and amazing seasonal pastries. I always get a vanilla latte or New Orleans’ iced coffee when I go. Fox in the Snow has been nationally recognized as one of the best coffee shops in America and all of my out-of-town friends love it!
Favorite Breakfast Location
I love that Katalina’s goal is to use local and organic ingredients throughout their entire menu. Some of my favorite items are the breakfast tacos, Katalina’s Latina Sandwich, and the Nutella Pancake Balls!
Favorite Spot for a Date Night
South Village Grille is one of those places where I have always had an amazing dish. It’s located in German Village, and makes any night feel special and elevated, with its dim lighting and relaxed ambiance. The menu changes seasonally, but the pizzas are a hit!
Favorite Place for Dining With Large Groups
One of my favorite spots to go with large groups is Tai’s Asian Bistro. The service is quick, there are plenty of tables, and the portions are group friendly. My friends and I frequently split the gigantic pad thai! Also, don’t forget to try their bubble teas!
Favorite Place to Celebrate an Anniversary or Birthday
Lindey’s is a Columbus classic that is perfect for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. The service is always outstanding, and the patio is my favorite. I still think about the “Lindey’s Post Mortem” dessert I once had for my birthday!
Favorite Spot out in the Suburbs
Sometimes it’s hard to find good local spots in the suburbs, but one of the most popular taco spots happens to have multiple locations near the suburbs. Los Guachos has amazing al pastor tacos and rotating daily specials that can’t be missed.
Favorite “Hidden Gem” of a Restaurant
Located on the west side of Columbus, Galloway Tavern has some seriously awesome wings and pizza at great prices! Growing up on the west side, I never knew about Galloway Tavern wings until a couple years ago. They are located right off of the Camp Chase Bike Trail.
