Explore Columbus: Brew Your Own at North High Brewing

At 1288 North High Street, you can try your own hand at becoming brewmaster for a day. North High Brewing company boasts over 100 brews (from their own kegs and from elsewhere) on a constantly rotating tap menu, full food service, a full liquor license and a designation as one of the best craft brew destinations in central Ohio. They are also the only brew-on-premises location in central Ohio.

“You can go in and brew your own batch of beer. It’s a really fun process,” explains co-owner Gavin Meyers. “We saw a unique opportunity to bring that concept to Columbus.”

North High Brewing offers about 30 recipes to choose from — stouts, porters, IPAs, lagers — whatever you as brewmaster want to make. These recipes range in price from $190 to $240 dollars. Time spent creating the brew varies depending on the recipe but expect to spend about two to three hours on site for the brewing process. After the initial brew process, the alcohol must ferment for a few weeks. It is at that point that you can return to bottle your finished product.

You are welcome to bring your own bottles or you can opt to purchase them on site. Expect to spend about $60 to $90 if you decide to purchase bottles on site. The average yield is 15 gallons so you can expect to walk out with about 140 12 oz. bottles.

North High Brewing also offers you the option of creating your own custom labels. “We get a lot of corporate team building events,” explains Meyers. “Couples will come in to brew beer to serve at their wedding with their picture on it. It is completely customizable.”

Brew on premise is ideal for anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at home brewing but was unsure of how to get started or whether it was really for them. The initial investment can be daunting and many would-be brewers require some guidance.

“Everyone wants to try their hand at craft brewing,” says Meyers. “It’s a fun way to do it without risk of contamination or stinking up your house.”

“We take on all that risk, labor, investment and sanitation,” Meyers promises. You just get to enjoy the fun of brewing your own beer without the hassle.
