First Look: Agave & Rye – Short North

Agave & Rye celebrates the grand opening of its first Columbus location today, Wednesday June 1, at 479 N. High St.

Tacos are back at the Short North address as the Covington, KY based chain takes over the former home of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. But Agave & Rye’s tacos stray far from the traditional, with mammoth creations that feature everything from hot dogs and mac & cheese, to kangaroo, lobster, pepperoni, crispy orange (vegan) chicken and more. Recognizable taco fillings like al pastor and carne asada also make an appearance, but in amped up “epic tacos” that feature a double-shelled soft and crunchy combo.

Munchies, chips & dip and a handful of “not a taco” entrees round things out.

In the drinks department, signature cocktails like Bourbon Peach Punch and Bourbon, Black Cherry & Mango Habanero slushee are joined by extensive bourbon and tequila lists with dozens of varieties each.

Happy Hour at Agave & Rye runs from 3 – 6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Friday, with $6 OG Margaritas and Bourbon Peach Punch and $2 domestic cans, as well as $1 off all Epic Tacos and $3 chips & queso. The restaurant also offers Taco Tuesday and Whiskey Wednesday specials.

Agave & Rye marks restaurateur Yavonne Sarber’s comeback in Columbus, and she’s doubling down, with plans for a second Agave & Rye location to open at 1295 Grandview Ave. later this month. The two Columbus locations are the 11th and 12th restaurants in the empire, with additional spots in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Indiana.

Sarber was behind bygone Downtown restaurants like deNOVO and Manifesto.

    Agave & Rye Short North is open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. – 12 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Sunday.
