The Avett Brothers Deliver a Crowd-Pleasing Performance at the LC
The Avett Brothers followed the Appalachian Mountains from North Carolina to the LC Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio last Saturday, where they performed before more than two thousand adoring fans. Bringing with them a modern-day ruckus-roots revival festival, The Avett Brothers had everyone in attendance jumping to their feet in jubilation and making music-inspired impromptu dance moves all night long.
For the price of a ticket, the Avett Brothers gave the crowd a lesson in folk-ology that spanned generations and genres. In top form, brothers Scott and Seth performed an energetic 21-song set that won the audience over after the first few bars of their opener “Salvation Song.” The night’s music swayed from an old-time bluegrass shuffle to sincere introspective ballads to up-tempo folk-pop. The City of Columbus joined in every note.
To everyone’s delight, the band reached back into their vault for songs early on in the brothers’ career and resuscitated old gems like “Pretty Girl from Mathews” and “Please Pardon Yourself.” But it was songs from their latest album, I and Love and You that harnessed the night’s electricity. “And it Spread” and “Ill with Want” showed the crowd what the Avett Brothers can do when they are firing on all cylinders. Silence fell over the LC when Scott Avett sang “Murder in the City,” accompanied only by his guitar and an earnest whisper, as though he were giving a melodic soliloquy.
The evening ended with the Avett Brothers singing the title track from I and Love and You with a powerful delivery. As the crowd sang along to the final words, “I and love and you,” it seemed clear in that moment, that all parties truly meant what they were saying.
