Free2Move Ends Car Sharing Service After One Year

Car-sharing service Free2Move has officially ended their original service plan in Central Ohio, just shy of one year after they expanded into this market.

“Customers feedback has shown that you need a longer-term solution than Car-sharing,” stated the company in an email sent out yesterday to customers. “And we have the solution! So we decided to adjust our offer for the citizen of Colombus (sic) and to propose exclusively Car on Demand, our all-inclusive month-to-month car subscription alternative, and consequently to end our Car-Sharing offer.”

Free2Move is a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based parent company Stellantis, which was formed in 2021 during an automotive industry merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Puegeot S.A. Group. In 2022, Stellantis acquired Share Now — which was formed as a merge between carsharing services DriveNow and Car2Go — and folded it under Free2Move operations.

Car2Go operated in the Columbus from October 2013 to May 2018 before it exited multiple markets in North America.

“We are disappointed to see the Free2Move car share program exit the Columbus market,” stated Justin Goodwin, Administrator with the Division of Mobility & Parking with the City of Columbus. “The city remains committed to the benefits that car-sharing service offers in our community to both vehicle owners and non-owners. And we are open to all mobility solutions that support the city’s sustainability goals and management of parking and mobility demands in our core neighborhoods.”
