GCAC Presents: CSO Adds Southern Theatre

For the first time in the Columbus Symphony’s 60-year history, four subscription programs from its regular 12-program Masterworks season will be performed at the Southern Theatre. String Summit is the first of the four Southern Masterworks programs and will be presented October 21-23, featuring internationally renowned guest violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

You may be familiar with the Southern Theatre through the hundreds of events and performances it hosts each year—concerts, theatre, opera, and even weddings. But why the move for the CSO?

Knowing a little about the Southern’s history might help answer that question. Located just two blocks south of the Ohio Theatre at 21 East Main Street, the 933-seat historic Southern Theatre opened in 1896 as an opera house. This means it was designed and built specifically for live performances, so from its very beginnings, it was intended to offer patrons exceptional acoustics and an extraordinarily intimate setting. Because of the theatre’s jewel box architectural style, the furthermost seat from the stage is only 75 feet away.

During a top-to-bottom, $10 million renovation in 1998, great care was taken to add modern amenities and comforts while retaining the Southern’s historical beauty and natural architectural acoustics. Every seat is large and comfortable, and offers the most leg room of any of the downtown theatres.

All of these factors make the Southern Theatre ideal for showcasing the live performance of symphonic music, and played a large part in the CSO’s decision to add the Southern to its Masterworks season.

“I think people will really enjoy the Southern, as it will give us the opportunity to engage patrons on a more personal level,” stated Jean-Marie Zeitouni, CSO Music Director. Jean-Marie will conduct three of the four Southern programs.

The three additional Masterworks programs which will be performed in the Southern Theatre during the CSO’s 2011-12 season include:

    Dialogues
    November 18-20
    Jean-Marie Zeitouni, conductor

    McGegan Returns!
