Eugene Johnson wanted to open a New York-style men’s shoe boutique in Columbus. But he knew he couldn’t.

And that’s not just because a men’s-only shoe store would have a hard time surviving in Columbus. It’s also because Columbus isn’t ready for New York.

“I could go and go crazy,” said Johnson, a native New Yorker, as he looked around at his offerings at Geno Elon Shoes. “These are just some moderate styles, because Columbus people are not into shocking stuff.”

So Johnson incorporated women’s shoes into his vision, tempered his selections and opened the Short North shop in early April. He carries Juno New York, a Soho-based brand, and a line of women’s shoes from Brazil. His approach is “big city fashion footwear” that’s high-quality, trendy and can’t be found anywhere else in Columbus.
