    Home businesses heat up

More than half of all U.S. businesses are home-based, according to Business Week Online. What may be even more surprising is this: home-based businesses employ 13 million people in the United States. That’s one of every 10 private sector workers. Far from playing a marginal role in of our economy, home-based companies are big business.

Perhaps this is especially true now, as the current economic climate forces more and more people to look at self-employment as a way to make ends meet. In some respects the time to start a business couldn’t be better. The internet, as well as advanced telecommunications tools, have made starting and running a business easier than ever.

Networking, marketing, and engaging customers can be done through a myriad of social media tools and web applications. Free, open source photo editing software and online video editing software can help entrepreneurs create professional-looking marketing materials.

As one entrepreneur put it, “Online, my storefront is as big as Wal-Mart’s.”

Worthington Libraries recognizes these trends, as well as the important role home-based businesses play in our communities. For that reason, Worthington Libraries has teamed up with a group of local, home-based entrepreneurs to offer Home Business How To.

The program will feature a panel discussion with some of Central Ohio’s most notable “homepreneurs.” Panelists will offer their first hand knowledge about a wide range of home business issues, including planning, financing, marketing, and networking.

If you’ve been thinking about making the transition to a home-based business, this session might be just the inspiration you need. Panelists include Made By Amy D, Sassafras Bakery, Stinkybomb Soap, GLFM Office Solutions, and Professional Business Coach Wes Mayer.

Home Business How To is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Worthington Libraries and the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce. The program will be held Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Old Worthington Library at 820 High St.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
