As September lurks in the last of the summer’s shadows, local bars begin to gear up for the fall. The last hot and sweaty hoorah’s of the season are approaching, weather is cooling down and studded leather jackets are being taken out of storage. Rock ‘n’ roll is always fashionably late in the season, and shortly making its’ debut.
Tonight, The Grass Skirt and Jon Fintel, of Relay Recording, are hosting that rock ‘n’ roll event. Ten local bands, friends and partners accompany Jon Fintel in debuting his local band compilation. Eight local bands will play a live set, stretching from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. This all-day event celebrates what we all so frequently and passionately celebrate: local music and Columbus. Not only is the appeal centered towards community and live music, but the first 100 attendees receive a free compilation on vinyl. Free is good. Free is fun.
If that’s not incentive enough, the incredibly talented (and local) Alison Rose of Alison Rose apparel, has designed the event’s Relay Rock Show shirts, and will further be for sale at the show. Enjoy your mid-70’s-weathered-Saturday at The Grass Skirt, and support local.
Run by one man, Jon Fintel, Relay Recording is Columbus’ exclusive independent recording studio. After dabbling in audio-engineering for more than fifteen years, Fintel found his oasis. Relay Recording Studio rests on the corner of N. 6th Street and Spring Street in Downtown Columbus. The effortlessly appealing aesthetics are as captivating as Brooke Shields’ in Blue Lagoon, circa 1980. The interior, re-designed by Fintel, is authentically exposed with brick, brightened with posters, and stocked with endless instruments and equipment–not to mention inhabited with goofy interns, friends and girlfriends that have found comfort in the studio. Fintel, with his salt ‘n’ pepper beard and shy dimples, runs a wildly friendly and professional establishment. His ambition and interest in the Columbus music scene led to six months of recording and producing a compilation album, something the city of Columbus is salivating over. Therefore, I present to you, The Relay Rock Show.
Fintel has worked in many (of his own) studio’s before, previously partnering with Brian Phillips in “Live Relay Sessions,” and has crafted two compilations in the past. This third compilation features ten Columbus bands who were interested in recording un-released tracks on the record. I had asked Fintel a few questions about the compilation and his intentions with the final product. Fintel began crafting his compilation in February 2014, pursuing a handful of artists that he has already worked, played or recorded with. Fintel continued to reach out to a few bands that he sought suitable for the record, and finalized his compilation: Bummers, Way Yes, She Bears, The Girls!, Winter Makes Sailors, Cliffs, Post Coma Network, Eye, Swimsuit Edition and Stations (Fintel’s band). Each band was given full artistic freedom, encouraged to record a track that was “in the making.”
The Grass Skirt will debut Relay Rock Show beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, September 6th.
The show will feature live sets from seven of the contributing local bands and an additional Columbus local band. Admission is $5.00 for 21+. Craft brews are provided by Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery, Fat Heads Brewery and Mad Tree Brewing, featuring a signature cocktail by The Kraken Rum.
