Local Speaker Featured on TED Homepage

Last November, Jim White took to the stage at the Capitol Theatre to give a talk at the annual TEDxColumbus event. His presentation, titled “The little problem I had renting a house”, told the story of the racial injustices he faced as a young man who served his country in the US Air Force, but struggled to find a home that he was allowed to buy for his family.

The 14-minute presentation was viewed online 5,200 times since November, but over the weekend it got a big bump. The video was featured on the homepage of TED.com on Friday and of this morning, it’s now been watched over 213,000 times and climbing.

“As a community, this is a major milestone for TEDxColumbus as it puts Jim in the company with other global thought leaders,” explains Ruth Milligan, Co-Organizer of TEDxColumbus. “Only 1% of all TEDx talks are published on the ted.com homepage.”

White’s video is the second from TEDxColumbus to be featured at TED.com. The first was a talk from cybersecurity researcher Chris Domas in 2013, which has been viewed over 824,000 times to date.

The next local TEDx event takes place on May 28th at the Southern Theater.
