Each summer, Kathy Heinlein’s stout brick home erupts with colorful petals and leafy greens. While she loves to host garden parties for friends and neighbors, the rest of Columbus will get their chance to stroll Heinlein’s yard, and nine other splendid spaces, as part of Merion Village’s ninth-annual Garden Tour on Sunday.

“People like gardens that look like something they can do,” she said.

The Merion Village gardens on tour are mostly designed and maintained by the homeowners, so the free, self-guided tour is a great way for experienced and aspiring gardeners to gather firsthand insight.

The gardens on tour reflect the varying styles and spaces of the homeowners, who range from lifetime residents to young professionals. “It’s been trial and error [for us]. We’ve definitely killed a lot of plants,” joked first-time homeowner Katie Young.
