    My Old World Bakery

Sometimes it sucks living in a part of town (the west side) that isn’t a destination for dining, shopping, or let’s be honest here – really much a destination of anything.

What we do have here, in spades, are the types of shops that your parents would have gone to. Thurn’s for smoked meat. Schumann’s for other meats. And then once in a while, you stumble into a gem accidentally.

That’s what happened to me the other day. On our way to Trattoria La Tavola for dinner, our navigation system had us going down Demorest Road. I’ve seen the sign for this bakery tons of times while driving at night, but it was always closed. So when I saw the “open” light on this time around, I told my husband to pull into the parking lot.

My Old World Bakery is just that – an old fashioned mom and pop bakery that keeps early hours and makes everything under the sun – breads, rolls, doughnuts and pastries, cookies, cakes and pies – you name it. I haven’t seen anything quite like it since I was a young girl growing up in Jersey. Sure, we have tons of doughnut shops around here. Tons of bakeries that make bread – but a full service bakery?

We got a dozen doughnuts ($6 per dozen, or .60 each) to try them out. Even near closing, these were the freshest, most flavorful doughnuts either of us have had in years. Everything is made from scratch, so if you call ahead a day or two, she (the owner) will customize anything you want. You want powdered or sugared doughnuts instead of glazed? They can do that. She said that people drive in from Westerville for the Danish Doughnuts. After trying one, I believe it.

The best part is that it is pretty much right around the corner from us, caddy corner from Franklin Heights High School at the intersection of Briggs and Demorest. They get a lot of student business in the morning, when teenage boys will buy the mini pepperoni rolls a bag at a time and scarf them down in the parking lot.

Come on down to the West Side, folks. Once in a while, we do actually have something worth travelling for. :)

If you’d like to go: My Old World Bakery, 962 Demorest Rd, Columbus, OH 614.278.8046. Hours: T-Th 6a-5p, F 5a-5p, Sa 5:30a-3p, Su 7a-1p.
