    New 56-Unit Apartment Project Coming to Italian Village

    JDS Companies appears ready to move forward on a four-building project that would bring 56 new apartments to Italian Village. The project, which they are calling Battery B, would be built on a vacant lot at the corner of East 2nd Avenue and North 6th Street. It would sit behind the original Jeffrey Mining Company office building that JDS developed into apartments in 2005.

    The company received approval at the November 19th Italian Village Commission meeting for slight modifications to the design of the project, which had previously been approved in August of 2012.

    The 56 one-bedroom apartments will be spread among four buildings, all interconnected with walkways. Surface parking lots will provide 59 dedicated spaces for residents. Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design is the architect for the project.

    Cityspace spokesperson Priscilla Smith provided some information on the name, which refers once again back to the mining-equipment company that operated on the site for so many years;

    “The two sons of founder Joseph A. Jeffrey, organized the miners in 1917 into an artillery battery, Battery B of the 37th division, and went to serve their country in the World War I,” said Smith. “What better place to live, learn, and discover then on the same soil where so many successful, hardworking people did for decades.”
