When Rife’s Market announced their closure in late 2014, a hole emerged in the Grandview area specialty grocery shopping market. Some of that niche will be filled this summer when The Butcher & Grocer opens for business at 1089 West First Avenue. The new store is a venture between partners Tony Tanner and local butcher Tim Struble.
“We are committed to only selling fresh Ohio born and raised animals, “said Tanner. “We will be offering beef, pork and lamb directly from the farmers and ranchers. We will not be selling anything that comes from a box or out of plastic.”
The 1,750 square foot store will also carry chicken from Gerbers Amish Farm Chicken in Kidron, Ohio, as well as a selection of cheese, house-made sausages and other specialty grocery items. The farms and suppliers that Tanner and Struble will be working with have all been hand selected based upon their principles about proper practices.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do since I was 16 years old,” said Struble. “I’ve been in this business for 14 years and I finally found someone with like-minded ideals and goals and I couldn’t be happier with where I am now.”
While Struble will handle the butchering side of the business, Tanner will handle the operations side. He said the store will likely be open six days a week, with hours of operation to be announced in the near future.
