Ground was broken last week on four new homes in the American Addition neighborhood, signaling the start of a renovation effort being led by Homeport.
“These revitalization efforts in American Addition are an outstanding example of the strategic use of NSP2 funds by the city,” said Homeport President and CEO Amy Klaben at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We are bringing high-quality, energy-efficient homes and ready home buyers to a neighborhood close to downtown and in the vicinity of the new STEM school.”
American Addition is a small neighborhood originally laid out over 100 years ago, located along Joyce Avenue, just east of the South Linden area. The long neglected neighborhood was only annexed into Columbus proper in 1959, and city services and infrastructure were not fully developed until decades later.
“This marks another step in the transformation of the historic American Addition neighborhood,” said Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “Together, we will turn one of the most neglected neighborhoods in the city’s history into a vibrant residential area with new homes and green infrastructure.”
The four homes under construction will range between 1400 and 1600 square feet and will be priced between $110,000 and $140,000. Construction is expected to be complete in March 2012, which will complete the first of a four-phase project that will include a total of 110 new homes over the next 10 years.
