For the first time in nine years, the marathon’s course was changed, to add about 2 miles in Grandview Heights. The city turned into a block party to cheer on the athletes. Energetic neighbors lined the streets, some clanging bells and pots, cheering and applauding the runners.

Grandview was added to the course to attract more athletes, said Scott Weaver, the marathon’s executive director. “With the scenic beauty of the neighborhood and the community embracing a lot of events, we thought it would be a good match,” Weaver said.

Two years ago, 7,600 athletes participated in the marathon. This year, more than 11,500 hit the streets.
