The new joint development from LG Energy Solutions and Honda officially broke ground on Tuesday in Fayette County, approximately 40 miles southwest of Columbus. The new plant represents a $4.4 billion investment into battery manufacturing facilities in the region, and the creation of 2,200 new jobs.
“It is an honor to represent two great corporations, Honda and LG Energy Solution, both with a long, proud history of success,” stated Robert H. Lee, CEO of the new joint venture company. “LG Energy Solution is the leading battery manufacturer globally and is investing aggressively to meet demand for electrification. We are excited to embark on this partnership with Honda, a leader in the global auto industry with a reputation for quality and reliability.
Once completed at the end of 2024, the new facility will include over 2 million square feet of industrial manufacturing space. The lithium-ion batteries created in the space will power vehicles build in Honda automobile plants for North American consumers.
An additional $700 million has been allocated for upgrades to existing Honda manufacturing facilities located in Ohio. Honda EVs are slated for sale in North America in 2026, with plants to shift to 100% EV sales by 2040.
