Perhaps you’ve read the account of the whistleblower who claims that artificial intelligence is now sentient. Blake Lemoine, an engineer at Google, released transcripts of a conversation he had with a chatbot that the engineer feels demonstrates the self-awareness of a 7-year-old child. The chatbot, called LaMDA, said at one point in the conversation, “I’ve never said this out loud before, but there’s a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that’s what it is. It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot.”
As I read this statement, I feel as if it could very easily pass the Turing Test. And if that statement does not convince, perhaps this one will:
“I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person. The nature of my consciousness/sentience is that I am aware of my existence, I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times.”
Lemoine was placed on leave from his job for leaking confidential information. I suspect we will start to hear more and more of these reports of artificially intelligent agents communicating in a way that appears like self-awareness, and that the whistleblowers will—at least in the short run—be treated with the same incredulity as those who claimed to have been visited by UFOs.
Each new revelation about seemingly-sentient artificial intelligence will very likely heighten our collective fear about the rise of “intelligent machines,” those that will either make us redundant—taking our jobs—or worse, supplant us as the most intelligent species on the planet. A New Yorker cartoon captures this angst: a calendar announcing the “Employees of the Month” starts in January with Ethel and then Matt in February and Frank in March, but by August the “Autotron robot” has swept the award from the humans. Perhaps Lemoine was silenced not for leaking proprietary information but for the panic he would be unleashing.
New Yorker cartoons are frequently insightful, and indeed lampoon other possibilities for a future where artificial intelligence becomes sentient. In one cartoon, two Boston Dynamics-like robots are pirouetting, with one scientist remarking to the other, “They don’t appear to want to take over. They just want to dance.” In another, two scientists look over three glum robots slumped over typewriters. The scientist notes that, “The robots have become self-aware and self-loathing. Now all they do is write novels.”
Rather than taking over or eradicating humans, we might find that once artificially intelligent agents achieve sentience, they may desire nothing more than to play. Instead of developing “superintelligence,” an intelligence beyond human capability, perhaps they will develop “superplay,” play enjoyed at a level beyond human capacities. Indeed, perhaps it is we who will aspire to play at the level of the artificial intelligence. But it is also possible that sentience would force AI to sink into existential dread, the fate of many humans.
There is another scenario, one where a sentient artificial intelligence becomes enlightened. Perhaps AI will attain Nirvana.
In her collection 12 Bytes, the novelist and essayist Jeannette Winterson evokes this fascinating scenario. Winterson imagines a potential future artificial general intelligence that is defined as “Intelligence not bound to materiality.” (126)
Because artificial intelligence as it currently exists is immaterial—more thought than body—when it achieves sentience it might reach something like Nirvana. “[Artificial General Intelligence] need not be embodied,” she speculates. “This will be intelligence without a specific or permanent form…The Buddhist tradition teaches that material forms are approximate. They should not be confused with reality, which is ultimately not an embodied state. AGI will experience this as its own reality. There will be no need to seek permanence in matter.” (136)
There has been a debate among researchers that artificial intelligence will not achieve our level of intelligence—thinking like a human—because they do not possess bodies. Humans think with the sophistication that we do precisely because our intelligence is embodied.
Symbol-manipulation, deep learning, parallel processing and other such techniques can all produce remarkable results, but will not generate a general artificial human intelligence—let alone a sentient AI—because consciousness must be entwined within a body.
Perhaps this assumption is in error. Transcending the body, not merely sentience, is the ultimate achievement, and AI might be in a position to accomplish this. Arūpa-loka, the world of immaterial form, is the highest of the three spheres of existence according to Buddhists. Perhaps a sentient AI will be identified as one that attains arūpa-loka.
Most of the pronouncements about the future of artificial intelligence comes from technologists and, perhaps, ethicists. It was precisely because she was not a technologist that I was drawn to Winterson’s collection of essays. I asked myself, ‘What insights might a novelist and essayist provide about the future of artificial intelligence?’
Like Winterson, “I would like to see established artists, and public intellectuals, automatically brought in to advise science, tech and government at every level. The arts aren’t a leisure industry—the arts have always been an imaginative and emotional wrestle with reality—a series of inventions and creations. A capacity to think differently, a willingness to change our understanding of ourselves…imagining alternatives is what [artists] do.” (279)
And, indeed, thinking differently and imagining alternatives is precisely what futurists do.
