Ohio’s Own: Balancing the Excess with 80 Acres Farms

You should definitely not look for nutrition advice here. That sort of thing comes from dietitians, who are registered with the state. It’s their job to dispense facts about good healthy eating, and that’s a legally protected status. It’s against the law for random yahoos to give nutrition advice.

Anyway, this being New Year’s, we’re going full-salad this week. And greens are the thing.

That little nugget of truth became evident a few years ago, while seeking out the absolute healthiest thing to eat. Admittedly, the search mission was a little skewed, as the term “healthy” can be defined lots of different ways. Still, the idea was to identify the most naturally nutrient-dense thing, and using that standard, raw, leafy stuff like swiss chard and spinach came out looking pretty good.

So, to balance out all the eating excesses documented in these articles, there’s pretty much always a box of fresh, organic greens in the grocery cart. Josie’s and Organic Girl are both big players in the boxed green scene, and they’re both operations based in California.

Enter 80 Acres Farms out of Hamilton, Ohio. First, it’s not actually 80 acres…it’s infinite acres, which seems to be some sort of term for indoor hocus-pocus growing methods. While its boxed greens don’t have the “organic” label like Josie’s and Organic Girl, 80 Acres’ boxes are labeled “pesticide free” and “non GMO” which feels pretty darn close.

In terms of pre-washed salad blends, there are a host of options. Queen City is a blend of fancy lettuces (the sorts that seem healthier than iceberg) with arugula microgreens to provide the slam dunk in the nutrition department. The mix is at once crunchy, tender and mild: it truly inspires a sincere salad happiness that the internets likes to ridicule.

There are other flavors, Rhine Garden, Frill Seeker and Romaine Calm, for example, all with their own proprietary mix of greens. You can find 80 Acres product at grocery stores in the produce section.
