Ohio’s Own: Fart Murmur from Fartley Farms

Specialty Gas House is the local spot for gas fireplaces, grills and all the accessories for those sorts of toys. It’s also the local spot where you’ll find Fartley Farms hot sauces.

Sure, there is a sort of special adolescent thrill in going to someplace called Specialty Gas House to buy a product from Fartley Farms. The pun possibilities are so very tempting.

Until you realize that Fartley isn’t someone’s accidentally amusing name. It’s intentional word-play, with hot sauces that all have nicknames like “The Fart Grows Fonder” and “Farty in the USA.” Potty talk isn’t generally encouraged at the dining table, but the deliciously inappropriate sales angle makes the sauces simply irresistible.

Which is how we ended up with Fart Murmur. Made with scorpion peppers, it’s the hottest version in the house, which means it’s a Level 8. Sure, there were other options; fun, intriguing combos involving curry or one like Cranberry Habanero (levels 4 and 5). But why go half-way on these things? Plus, Fart Murmur has won hot sauce competition prizes, including one beating out 800 other competitors at ZestFest.

The first ingredients listed on the label are Scorpion Chili Peppers. For reference, those are typically hotter than Ghost Peppers and ten times as hot as a Scotch Bonnet. As described by the Fartley people, the Scorpion Peppers comprise half the bottle, with garlic, salt and a couple vinegars to give it some life. The end result? Well, the viscous brew is a nice dark reddish hue, a little ominously blood-like to be honest, and it comes across like exactly the sort of hot sauce you want to put on wings for your pal who only likes things super hot.

Fart Murmur is, for the record, insanely hot. It will slow you down. But the sauce also has a nice depth from its garlic element. Honestly, the garlic aroma is almost as strong as that of the fiery peppers. And it has the tangy balance that really does so nicely on wings…and a host of other things, like brats and pizza.
