The sun has officially set on Columbus’ hopes to host the Democratic National Convention, as the party officially announced this morning that Philadelphia has been chosen as the host city.
“In addition to their commitment to a seamless and safe convention, Philadelphia’s deep rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering,” stated DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement released this morning. “I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee.”
Columbus waged a very competitive bid to host the convention, making it to the final round of three candidates along with Brooklyn. Ohio will still remain in the political spotlight during the convention season in 2016, as Cleveland previously secured the Republican National Convention, which will take place July 18-21.
“We’re proud that Columbus put together an extremely competitive bid,” said Brian Ross, president and CEO of Experience Columbus. “Through this process, our city has gained new respect and recognition as a major American city on the rise. We know that our national Democratic leaders really enjoyed Columbus’ warmth, openness and creativity, and that their experiences here made selecting the convention site a very tough decision.”
