Photos: A Night of ’90s Nostalgia with Everclear at King of Clubs

It’s going to be a hard sell for me to convince you that a rock band from Oregon has any business headlining a St. Patrick’s Day party, but while the Irish spirit was a bit on the low side, the ’90s nostalgia was overflowing as radio-hit factory Everclear pulled out all the classics for an alt-rock throwback at King of Clubs on Friday night.

Since forming way back in 1991 before most people were born, and having more songs on the radio during the hey-day of alt-rock that it’s damn near impossible for even the most casual of music fans to not at least recognize an Everclear song, it’s still an impressive feat for the band to be able to tour and (almost) sell out shows. And during a set of almost exclusively *old* material, the band put out a largely entertaining, yet slightly routine, night of sing-along ’90s joy.

The band walked on stage a little before 10 p.m. to the instantly recognizable into of “So Much for the Afterglow” from the 1997 album of the same name before “Everything to Everyone” and the even older “Heroin Girl” that jogged memories of the first Everclear CD I owned and reminded me of how ancient I am…Although a quick look around the room showed me I wasn’t alone with that thought.

New song “Year of the Tiger” snuck its way into the set to a warm reception but, let’s be honest, everyone was here for the nostalgia hit, and more accurately, “Santa Monica,” and the rendition didn’t disappoint as the packed crowd sang along to every word as the set ended on a high of teenage memories of the hopes, dreams and endless summers of the late ’90s, before the final notes played out and everyone went home to relieve the babysitter, let the dog out and prepare for mid-life.
