Tonight, Blues Control will take the stage at, what seems to be, a venue where the most cutting edge bands seem to perform, Ace of Cups. While researching this band and sampling their music, I found it hard to pinpoint their genre of music. I could only come up with experimental, but that genre was too broad. Others called it “noise-rock”, but it did not compare to “traditional” noise-rock bands such as DZ Deathrays or Dope Body. I briefly spoke with members Lea Cho and Russ Waterhouse about how they fit into the world of music.
Both described their sound as “psychedelic and instrumental” with Cho on the synth and Waterhouse playing guitar. Both cited Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, and Guns and Roses as influences. There seems to be a pattern amongst new artists. It’s refreshing to hear bands such as Guns and Roses and Fleetwood Mac repeatedly acknowledged by bands that are rising in the ranks. I also spoke with them about releasing some of their songs on cassette tapes. Starting out, a friend asked if they could record their music at some shows, and thus, the cassette tapes were born. Now, their releases are on CD and are available for purchase.
The band will take the stage tonight at Ace of Cups for their second stop on their tour, and Sunday at The Happy Dog in Cleveland. A full list of tour dates and some songs can be found at www.dragcity.com.
