    Preview: CD102.5FM’s 2014 Summerfest

Each and every year, independently owned and operated radio, CD102.5FM, delivers the last ‘hoorah’ of the season. Sunday, August 10th, Summerfest is upon us all! Thousands of Columbus natives, as well as out-of-towners, flood the LC for the festival-style event. The city of Columbus eagerly awaits as the Summerfest bill is announced on air in June. Ten local and national acts have been swooped up by 102.5 for the day-long event, all for $18.50– that’s $1.85 per band. How can you beat that? You’re absolutely right, you just can’t. CD102.5 is for the people, and the people love every bit of it.

With previous headliners including Matt & Kim, Cold War Kids, Metric, The Lumineers and Cake, CD102.5 never fails to bring an eclectic and diverse line-up. This year, the line-up pulls from alternative pop, indie/garage rock bands, including Tokyo Police Club, The Whigs, Big Data, Vance Joy, Sleeper Agent, Manchester Orchestra and Ok Go. With a lineup that is subtly talented in a myriad of ways, the ten acts this year are sure to surprise many with an overwhelming presentation of talent. Local acts include DJ Lance & Mister Shifter and Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons. The entertainment doesn’t cease to stop with the music, as Columbus entertainers, The Ooh La La’s, will provide the “art of seduction,” with a burlesque show.

The LC, Promowest and CD102.5 have collaborated as the two perfect hosts, making THe LC feel as if it’s your own backyard. The venue will house five food trucks, as well as grant full access to the A&R Music Bar during the entire length of the show. This is a festival that is catered to the eating, drinking and dancing individual. The individual who would like to pop a squat with a  Tatohead snack  and ease into the music. Shortly after noon, The LC doors promptly unlock for the Summerfest public, music beginning at 12:30 p.m. A day with ebullient energy shall commence, and Columbus will experience this as a unit.

    Acts to watch out for:

    Spanish Gold

A supergroup comprised of My Morning Jacket’s drummer, Hacienda’s guitarist and  Gripo Fantasma’s guitarist, the three-piece’s debut album reeks of genuine talent. Three musicians who have mastered their art of instrumentation, Adrian, Patrick and Dante craft an edgy, alternative and rhythmically catchy sound. With single, “Out on the Street,” gaining massive rotation on CD102.5FM, Spanish Gold is pressing their footprint deeper and deeper into the Columbus’ music scene. Special guests on the album include, Black Joe Lewis’s entire horn section, Erika Wennerstorm (Heartless Bastards) on vocals, guitarist, Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket),  drummer, Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs),  bassist, Timothy Deaux (The Whigs), and Collin Dupuis, who’s produced The Black Keys, JEFF the Brotherhood and Grace Potter. I guess you could say these three men enjoy the collaboration, and the live show will undoubtedly represent their raw talent.

    Vance Joy

Australian singer-songwriter, James Koegh, topped charts with happy-go-lucky single,”Riptide,” off of 2013 album God Loves You When You’re Dancing. A song that “puts a lump in your throat” without much explanation, Vance Joy communicates with his listeners in an effortless way. An acoustic-driven indie pop track that is on constant rotation on CD102.5FM, has gained the popularity it sure needed, making Vance Joy “a must see act” for Lollapalooza last weekend. James’s smooth, sweet and seductive vocals, paired with the elegance of an acoustic, will be at peace with the lackadaisical energy at Summerfest.

    Manchester Orchestra

Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, Manchester Orchestra has been recording, touring and hypnotizing fans for an entire decade. An alternative rock band with grungy melodies and eerie guitar riffs, the five piece has a cult following. Sounds resembling to Brand New and Modest Mouse, the emotional lyrics, wailing vocals and heavy instrumental backbone leave listeners with heavy hearts and throbbing ears. Manchester Orchestra headlining performance will finish out Summerfest with belting fans and aggressive dancing, wrapping up the evening in full exhaust. Newly released record, Cope, Manchester continues to bring their combative energy to the stage. Frequently visiting Columbus on numerous occasions, Manchester packs a venue like a pack of sardines– Salty, slimy and all attendees there for one reason. Manchester Orchestra fully suits the all day event, as veteran and rookie listeners will be exposed to the live rendition of the new album, and old favorites.

    Sleeper Agent

Hailing form Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sleeper Agent’s energy could light fireworks off.  Young vocalist, Alex Kandal, was sought out by her current bandmates, after her performances of Adele covers during an open mic night. Making the transition from soft and sweet to upbeat and electronic pop, Sleeper Agent established their free-spireited sound. High energy tracks, “Get It Daddy” and “Waves” have flooded CD102.5FM airwaves, and with popular demand, we’ll witness the buyout energy as first-party observers. Sleeper Agent is the ultimate Summerfest band, bribing life, love and the pursuit of happiness to the event.
