Playing for the first time in Columbus, Dope Body will perform tonight at Double Happiness. Receiving high marks in Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound for their latest effort, Natural History, I had the chance to speak with drummer, David Jacober, about his old landlord, Frank, and how his band became to be Dope Body.
Living in the Copycat Building in Baltimore, Dope Body developed a friendship with their landlord, Frank. Frank not only appeared on their first flyer for the band in January of 2009, but also appears as the cover art for their album “Nupping”. The arts building is a little dilapidated now, but is mostly used a practice space. Jacober described it as a place where artists “can fuck everything up and paint on the floor”.
Tied into the “noise-rock” genre, which seems to be making a steady come back, but it when it comes to their live show, Jacober says “sometimes we al know what we want to do, but we usually don’t have a set list”. Before the show, Jacober says he’ll usually “drink a beer, smoke a joint, but most importantly, I have to eat”.
Although this band is nothing short of pure rock and energy, their musical tastes seem to be eclectic. Jacober says they all listen to different genres of music, but Baltimore/DC hip-hop music is where they stand on common ground.
Off of their album, “Nupping”, “Enemy Out of Me” is my personal favorite:
When explaining Dope Body, Jacober declares, “I just call it a rock band. Nothing’s off limits.”
