The Columbus Jazz Orchestra hit the bull’s-eye doing what it does best last night in the Southern Theatre with “Basie, Benny And The Duke.”

Alone, the band re-enlivened big-band favorites, most of them as familiar today as when they were first popular nearly 70 years ago. Supporting special guests, it rounded out a satisfying evening of jazz with rarer and welcome material tailored to the skills and experience of clarinetist Ken Peplowski and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard.

The Columbus Jazz Orchestra’s Swingin’ at the Southern series concert continues through Sunday in the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St. For times and ticket prices, call 614-294-5200 or visit JazzArtsGroup.org.
