Running Your Small Business & Enjoying Your Summer: Yes, You Can Do Both

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of a workaholic is “a compulsive worker.” Unfortunately, business owners tend to fit into this definition. With summer vacation on the horizon, it’s time for these workaholics to embrace the warm weather, soak up some vitamin D and take a step back from the everyday madness of endless emails, needy clients and outstanding invoices. That’s right, it’s time for a summer vacation.

Now I’m not telling you to pack up your briefcase and completely desert your job, only to return to the office mid-August. Here are some great suggestions of what you can do to manage your small business and enjoy your summer at the same time:

    1. Plan and Delegate – The summer season is inevitable; start planning and organizing your work schedule early so you can forecast any client needs and avoid last-minute headaches. If your business has more than just yourself, spread the wealth and delegate projects. This will allow you to breathe in that summer air a little easier.

    2. Outsource, Outsource, Outsource – Some business owners struggle with letting go of some of their work; it is important to do this to maintain a work-life balance, especially during these summer months! Outsource projects to other firms or hire an outside “help desk” solution to help with your customer service needs.

    3. Automate What You Can – If you’re worried about emails being sent on time, automate them. Most email systems and programs include automation rules that allow you to pre-schedule items in advance so you don’t need to worry about them being late.

    4. Email on the Go – Send emails from the beach, poolside, the mountains, etc. This is the remarkable thing about smart phones and tablets; you can soak up some rays and still answer clients and run your business.
