Shop Talk: New Plant Shop Finds a Home in Grove City

Signs from the universe, a game of Bunco, and a love for plants led Angie Dearwester to a historical home in Grove City for her next business venture.

The house located at 3407 Grant Ave. was built in 1865 and is now home to The Wild Seed, a plant shop with home decor and curated gifts. Dearwester has held pop-up hours in the shop since September and hosted an official grand opening ceremony last Thursday.

“I think more just the message of The Wild Seed is to just be yourself,” Dearwester said. “I want all people to feel good about themselves.”

Dearwester lives in Grove City and said opening a shop in the Town Center is something she’s wanted to do for years. Having an eye for design, she considered a home decor shop but later sparked an interest in plants and combined her love of both to create The Wild Seed.

Dearwester, also the owner of Trailer Made Mobile Bar, spent nine months searching online for spaces to open The Wild Seed but couldn’t find any in the area. One day in May she got the urge to take a different approach while meditating.

“Something told me, ‘Get in your car, girl, and go drive around, do old school style looking for something,’ so I did,” she said.

While she was driving, Dearwester got a phone call and happened to pull over next to the available house on Grant Avenue.

“I turned my head and it’s just right here in front, it says ‘for lease,’ and it was just like one of those moments,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is the house, this is like the perfect house. This is a sign.’”

Dearwester toured the house later that day and fell in love, but felt hesitant and decided she couldn’t manage both businesses. After informing the owner, Dearwester said she expected to feel relieved, but instead, she felt like she made the wrong decision.

In hopes of finding some clarity, Dearwester decided to meditate again. Not having time to spare, she asked for a clear sign about what she should do and used her upcoming game of Bunco — a dice game based on luck — with the neighborhood ladies as the subject for her meditation.

“The universe can give us a lot of signs, but sometimes it’s really hard to figure out what those signs are,” she said.

Dearwester decided that if she won at Bunco and received a prize related to a plant, the universe was telling her to pursue The Wild Seed.

“I went to Bunco, I won first prize and I won an actual plant, which in five years, I’ve never seen anybody win a plant,” she said. “That night I came home and was like, ‘That was it, that was the sign.’”

Dearwester called the owner the next day to tell him she changed her mind, and by June she had the house.

    The Wild Seed is located at 3407 Grant Ave. Starting in November, the shop will be open Tuesday from 1 – 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 1 – 5 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
