Shop Talk: Samson Men’s Emporium Grows into New Short North Home

Samson Men’s Emporium went from fitting into a shared space in the Short North to relocating and growing into an additional 500 square feet.

The boutique opened at 694 N. High St., the former home fo Sherrie Gallerie, in September after spending seven years in a building up the street. Owned by Travis Samson, the shop sells men’s clothes, accessories, grooming products and bar ware.

Samson opened the boutique in 2015 at 772 N. High St., and for the first 18 months, he shared the space with T. David Collection, an antique shop owned by Tom Crumley. Samson said Crumley was preparing to retire and approached him with the idea of moving in.

“He thought it would be a great way for me to get my feet wet,” Samson said. “It really worked out nice and it looked wonderful and gave me the idea to go ahead and keep the antiques and work off of the antiques.”

The idea to relocate came to Samson when he visited Rowe Boutique, who moved in the Short North in July.

“When I went to go see their new space, I just immediately got so jealous of all the extra square footage,” he said. “But the most important item is what customers can’t see, it’s the full basement.”

Samson said the shop’s original location was a great corner space that offered things such as a second floor mezzanine and a spiral staircase. These unique features, however, made it difficult to store products and move them around.

The additional space and basement at the shop’s new location allow Samson to bulk up all facets of the store. He designated the shop’s back corner to athletic ware, which he said has become more popular since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the close proximity between the new and old locations, Samson said he has already noticed changes in business.

“When I moved here I didn’t realize the sound was softer here versus where I was,” he said. “If you notice, once Buttles hits, people turn the base up in their cars, and then you have the pedal wagons and it was just a very lively part of Short North, which was great, but this has just been a little bit nicer.”

Samson Men’s Emporium is located at 694 N. High St. and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. More information about the shop can be found on its website, samsonmensemporium.com.
