    Short Order: Jojo’s Soul Food

JoJo’s Soul Food is a cute lil’ tow-behind mobile food operation, and one distinct from perhaps a better known JoJo’s in town that also does Memphis Barbecue. Not quite a “truck,” the tow-behind project looks for all the world like a giant bowling ball trailing behind a modest SUV. No-nonsense, the mobile kitchen is painted black with a simple logo bearing JoJo’s Soul Food’s name. Similarly, JoJo’s menu is no-nonsense too, turning out straightforward combinations of good quality food.

Case in point, the house tacos. You can watch over the top of the counter as the chicken is prepared on the grill, it’s not just a few pieces, but a respectable serving of tidy chunks, all of which are quality poultry (no processed mystery bits involved). The meat is layered on a griddled shell and then topped with a mixture of black beans combined with sweet pops of corn, some pico de gallo, a little cheese and a drizzle of chipotle ranch sauce to tie the whole thing together in a generously balanced masterpiece. You won’t find better value for your taco dollar. A taco or two makes a good lunch…and as an afterthought, the house tacos are even kind of healthy, so you won’t hate yourself afterwards.

Gluttony is of, course, always an option. You can keep going, exploring all of JoJo’s tacos from a selection that also includes shrimp and beef variations as well as an avocado sauce. The house menu changes depending on day, destination or market. There are also a host of sandwiches such as burgers, buffalo chicken and a Philly-inspired take on roast beef with sautéed onions, mushrooms and peppers. And Jojo’s has eggrolls too. Dessert options include banana pudding (sadly, unavailable at last visit, but it’s on the to-get list).

You can follow JoJo’s Soul Food though the Street Food Finder here.  Next stop is Pins Mechanical Company.
