Stand-Alone Giant Eagle Pharmacy Planned for South Side

Giant Eagle will be bringing a stand-alone pharmacy to the former Buckeye Food Market building at 1380 S. Fourth St.

The company said in a statement that the new store would open “in the coming months,” and that until that time customers could continue to pick up and drop off prescriptions at 280 E. Whittier St., where the pharmacy remains open even after the grocery store at that location served its last customers on December 31.

The company announced last August that it was not renewing its lease at the Schumacher Place store. That cleared the way for the Pizzuti Companies, which bought the property in 2017, to proceed with its plans to build a mixed-use development on the site.

The statement released by Giant Eagle said that the new Fourth Street store will “feature a full-service pharmacy and over-the-counter health products in addition to a variety of convenience offerings like a coffee bar, grab-n-go meals and beverages, a selection of beer and wine, lottery and more.”

The new pharmacy will be just under a mile away from the Whittier Street location.

The redevelopment plan for the Whittier site is on the agenda for the January 14 meeting of the Columbus Development Commission. The South Side Area Commission voted in December to approve the zoning changes needed to build the 262-unit project, after an earlier vote in which the Schumacher Place Civic Association voted against them.
