    Every month, Substance designers take scissors to shirts they created. In the spirit of creativity and reuse, they start all over again and come up with completely different clothing.

    The Short North shop’s Design Lab Collection, where pants become skirts and skirts become shirts, is one aspect of their many efforts to bring substance—practical, comfortable and classically simple substance—to style.

    The store opened a year-and-a-half ago and is staffed entirely by designers who craft classics that won’t go out of style, said Michele Ulmer, the store’s visual branding manager.
