    A decade ago, Shoku rode the early wave of serious sushi sources that began springing up. In the face of recent formidable competition, it has maintained its sushi standards and improved its regular menu items.

    The sushi at Shoku is generally above average for freshness and serving size. The rainbow roll ($12.95) is well-executed, from the flavor of avocado in the California-roll filling to the various fresh- tasting raw fish draped on top.

    The starters on the Pan-Asian menu include a large, interesting “Asian crab cake” ($8.95), fried and cut in quarters. The ingredients include what seems to be crab stick rather than crab, bread crumbs and several vegetables — principally carrot and onion.
