As Central Ohio grows to an estimated 1.7 million people by 2030, transportation planners say it will take billions of dollars to keep up with roads, mass transit and even bike paths.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission released a study yesterday of the transportation needs of Franklin and Delaware counties, as well as parts of Licking, Fairfield and Pickaway counties. The region has about 1.3 million people now.

The plan includes support for a streetcar line between German Village and Ohio State University, which the plan estimates will cost $64 million to $154 million. And it anticipates the need to spend $1.4 billion by 2030 to expand Central Ohio Transit Authority bus service in the region.
