If one of your new year’s resolutions is to get more creative in the kitchen, or even just get into the kitchen, period, then the North Market has a plan that’s going to make it that much easier for you. The Academy at the North Market is set to launch its 2014 series of classes, with an expanded repertoire of instructors and courses.

The Chef Series has become one of the most popular features at NoMa. Some of the city and region’s most recognizable and talented chefs have given of their time and talent in these classes, offering students the chance to get up close and personal to learn their tricks for creating restaurant-quality food at home.

These demonstration-only classes feature a multi-course dinner and wine pairing. Attendees leave with a full tummy, recipes of the dishes prepared, as well as information on the wines served. These classes are $50 per person, with a class limit of 30 participants.

In 2014, The Academy grows as it adds the Merchant Series to the roster. The Merchant Series brings together the gifted vendors and artisans at NoMa with the folks who want to learn from them. These classes will offer the chance to learn everything from flower arranging to vegan cooking in a safe, fun environment, as well as give attendees a chance to get to know their favorite NoMa personalities better.

The Chef Series kicks off on Wednesday, January 8 with David Tetzloff from G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar. Chef Tetzloff has been with G. Michael’s for 14 years, creating dishes with his signature, southern-inspired “low-country” flair, and for this event, he’ll be whipping up a menu that brings together homely comfort with masterful style.

The first course will be Bacon-Wrapped Crab-Stuffed Shrimp with Pan Fried Sweet Potatoes and Horseradish BBQ Sauce, followed by Mustard-Marinated Seared Tuna with a Black Eyed Pea, Bacon, and Mustard Green Ragout. Peanut Butter-Bourbon Rubbed Roasted Ohio Berkshire Pork Loin with Buttermilk Grits and Hominy, Bell Pepper and Cauliflower Chow Chow will round out this austral experience for novice and adroit home cooks alike.

On Sunday, January 12, the Merchant Series begins with a 2-hour session lead by Expressly Market Bakery & Bistro. This Lower Calorie Options: Post-Holiday course will show guests how to make better versions of dishes they crave to help them succeed at the number one resolution made every year: to lose weight.

Gay James and Luann Riley, the best friends behind the made-from-scratch bakery and bistro, will show attendees how to make a slightly spicy Black Bean Gumbo, a satisfying Asiago Salad, and finally, Energy Cookies, made with maple syrup and sunflower and pumpkin seeds for a healthy snack or dessert alternative.

The Merchant Series classes cost $20-$50 per person (Expressly Market’s class is $30), and runs every Sunday from 1pm – 3pm. Classes are held in the NoMa Kitchen, and there is a limit of 30 heads per class. The Chef Series is held on Wednesdays from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

In the upcoming weeks, look for Kent Rigsby from Rigsby’s Kitchen, Richard Blondin from The Refectory, Ed Kowalski from ManBQue, and personalities from Pistacia Vera and Lan Viet Market to be on hand to lead courses at The Academy. These classes tend to fill up quickly, so if you’re interested, you shouldn’t delay in registering.
