Trailer Roundup: Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, South Park & More

The annual video game industry expo known as E3 took place this past week, which means we got healthy dose of new video game teasers, trailers, previews and demos to drool over and anticipate in the coming months and years. Some of the biggest titles of the show include updates to big franchises including The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, Paper Mario, South Park, as well as a couple of new IPs that look promising. Oh yeah, and there’s also a few new film and tv show trailers this week too.

So as always, our “Trailer Roundup” series provides a sampling of what’s coming soon each week for our pop-culture and multimedia-savvy readers. Here’s the latest and greatest:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo fanboys got a bigger look at the new Zelda title coming next year in a new Breath of the Wild trailer. This game’s version of Hyrule showcases an expansive open world that includes shady forests, open grasslands and volcanic mountains. We can only assume there will be dungeons (oh yes, there will be dungeons) and will have to wait until sometime next year to play this one on the Wii U as well as the next Nintendo system, codenamed NX.

    Resident Evil 7

After veering away from the survival-horror genre into a series of full blown action-shooters, Resident Evil is headed back to its roots with its seventh main game, if the new trailer is any indicator of what to expect of the final game. Playstation 4 users were also treated to a teaser demo simultaneously, that was compared immediatley to the now-cancelled Silent Hills P.T. demo. RE7 is coming to PS4, Xbox One and Windows on January 24, 2017.

    Pete’s Dragon

Another week, another cartoon-turned-live-action film from Disney. This time we’re getting a first look at the modern reboot of 1977’s Pete’s Dragon, which technically was a mix of live action and cartoon, which means the live action mix with CGI is really the same kind of idea as the original. Find out if the new stands up to the old on August 12th.

    Death Stranding

Developer Hideo Kojima (most famous for the Metal Gear series) stole the show at E3 with the announcement of a new game called Death Stranding, which stars Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). Little is known about the game’s plot, the gameplay mechanics, and there’s no release date attached, but it’s said to be a PS4 exclusive.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

The creators of South Park are following up 2014’s hit video game The Stick of Truth with a new role playing game called The Fractured But Whole. This time around, instead of playing larping along in a medieval fantasy world, the foul-mouthed kids are taking on super hero roles with a goal of launching a cash cow movie franchise. Play along on December 6th on Xbox One, PS4 and Windows.

    Paper Mario: Color Splash

Anyone who thinks that Mario games are all the same, has likely not been following the RPG side of the mustachioed hero, as the Paper Mario series (and the Mario & Luigi series) seem to just get weirder and weirder (and funnier). In the upcoming WiiU edition of the series, Mario is tasked with restoring color to a world with the help of paint buckets while navigating a new take on the action-adventure game mechanics. Arrives on October 7th.

    Detroit: Become Human

Robotic humans in a futurist Detroit may evoke thoughts of Robocop, but new video game Detroit: Become Human appears to be a much slicker tale of androids and crime-solving. Developers are touting the game’s storytelling flow chart that allows for a lot of player choices and a lot of game endings (some good, some… not so good) to offer a wide variety of experiences and replay. No release date yet for this PS4 title.

    Anthropoid

While the title sounds like a B-movie thriller about robotic spiders, Anthropoid is actually the latest based-on-a-true-story set during Europe’s Hitler administration, where a resistance group from Prague attempt to assassinate a high level nazi officer. Hits theaters on August 12th.

    Morris from America

New film Morris from America tells the tale of a teenager from America coming of age in Germany where he struggles to adapt, make friends, and allow his talents to bloom as an aspiring hip-hop artist. Starring a young Markees Christmas in the titular role, along with Craig Robinson. In theaters on August 19th.

David Brent: Life on the Road

Everyone’s favorite original Michael Scott is back again for a follow up film to the original British Office. David Brent has given up his nine to five in favor of a rock and roll lifestyle on the road as a musician. The trailer certainly has airs of Spinal Tap, so if it’s half as good, then we’re all in for a treat. Arrives in August in the UK with no US release date announced yet.

    The Young Pope

What if instead of being really old… the pope were really young? Or at least kind-of young? Jude Law (who is actually 43), stars as a newly elected pope who is grappling with his responsibilities in a new HBO series. Not much else is known at this point, but the trailer is certainly vague and ominous. No air date has been announced yet.

    Almost Christmas

Now that it’s nearly 90 degrees outside on a regular basis, here comes a reminder that Christmas is only six months away. Almost Christmas is the latest in the never ending series of “crazy family gets together for the holidays” films, this time around with an ensemble cast that includes Danny Glover, JB Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Omar Epps and plenty of other celebs. In theaters on November 11th.

    Days Gone

Another open-world video game shown at E3 is Days Gone. Set it a post-apocalyptic future somewhere between The Last of Us and Fallout 4, you wonder a vast world with a simple goal of survival. The game is a PS4 exclusive with no release date yet announced.

    Prey

Bethesda released a new trailer at E3 for a rebooted Prey, based on the 2006 title of the same name. You’ll take on the role of protagonist Morgan Yu, who navigates a space station overtaken by aliens in the not-too-distant future. The game is slated for a PS4, Xbox One and PC release sometime in 2017.
