Treat to Try: Tudie’s Cookies & Sweets

The first trip to Tudie’s Cookies & Sweets resulted in the modest purchase of a cinnamon roll and a very large cookie. (See up top.)

The second trip was roughly 30 minutes later. Because the initial order launched a strong urge to hoard more of Tudie’s wares as quickly as possible. So if you visit the bakery, a warning: Try things out before you walk out the door. Otherwise, you may find yourself making additional trips in one day.

The first thing to secure is a Cinnamon Roll. Yes, an obsession with cinnamon rolls as a Treat to Try is well-evidenced in prior works, but seriously: THIS is the roll.

First, it’s $4: a bargain in the current market…a bargain in any market. What does four bucks buy? Hold out your hand, stretch out your fingers: look at that. That is how big the roll is: biggie-big. And it’s positively slathered with homespun powdered sugar icing. The bread element is tender, and the cinnamon sugar levels inside are substantial – substantial enough to crystalize into bonus chunks of confection found clinging here and there.

Other insanely delightful treats include a Twix Tart. If you’ve had dulce de leche (a caramel sauce), you know that there is never enough of it: You are always left needing more. The Twix Tart offers more, much, much more. The shell holds a well of 100% pure creamy dulce de leche with a dollop of chocolate on top.

The caramel sauce is leveraged in the Banoffe cookies too, which are lots of fun. If the name sounds familiar, that’s likely because there’s something in Britain called “banoffee pie.” It originated in the ’70s and involves caramel and bananas. In Tudie’s interpretation, it’s a large, soft cookie with a combo of cookie crumbs, banana chips, toffee, a tunnel of caramel and a light dollop of whipped cream frosting garnished with the cookie’s crunchy elements. Yes, a lot going on, but that’s what makes it exceptional.

For s’more fans, there are both cookies (with teddy grahams and a well of marshmallow cream), as well as s’more rolls. And for fans of the savory, we found individual-sized quiches with velvety egg and sausage combos.

There’s a lot more to explore, and there’s time to do that on a regular basis. Tudie’s is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 3009 N. High St.
